The People Living with HIV (PLHIV) Stigma Index is a standardized tool to gather evidence on how stigma and discrimination impacts PLHIV. It is essentially a research project documenting HIV-related stigma and discrimination experienced by those living with HIV. The United States has reports from Louisiana, Michigan and New Jersey only but there are over 20 other reports from various countries. In Zimbabwe, the index is used to provide training. Patience Madari, a teacher and guidance counselor living with HIV states, “After receiving this training and with this knowledge I now have through the stigma index program, I am now empowered. I can handle challenging situations and I am now teaching others how to stand up for themselves.” Learn more at https://www.stigmaindex.org/.
Implicit Bias Modules (Address Your Stigma)
If you took time to review the above videos, you might notice that the stigma PWLE face comes often from biases individuals in their lives carry about PWLE. We all carry biases. In order to address the biases we carry, the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race & Ethnicity produced some modules to give you some insights about how our minds operate and help you understand the origins of implicit associations and biases.
In addition to the implicit bias modules that help you address your internal stigma, please check out this Anti-Stigma Language Document, HIV #Language Matters, which was created by PLHIV!
